Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy (approximately 67% Ni – 23% Cu) that is resistant to seawater and steam at high temperatures, as well as salt and caustic solutions. Alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold work. This nickel alloy has good corrosion resistance, good weldability and high strength. Low corrosion rates in fast-flowing brackish or seawater, combined with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters, and resistance to a wide range of corrosive conditions make it ideal for marine applications and other non-oxidizing It is widely used in chloride solution.

Monel 400 has excellent corrosion resistance to many reducing media such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. In general, Monel 400 is more resistant to corrosion by oxidizing media than higher grade copper alloys. Monel 400 resists pitting and stress corrosion cracking in most fresh and industrial waters. It has good resistance in flowing seawater but can cause pitting and crevice corrosion under stagnant conditions. Monel 400 is probably the most resistant to hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations up to the boiling point. Monel 400 is not tough and does not tend to embrittle at low temperatures. It is work hardenable.
