ASTM A270 specification is covering the grade of welded, seamless austenitic/ferrite and heavily cold worked welded SS sanitary tubing. Those are intended for use in the food industry, dairy industry and are also having special surface finishes.
A270 TP316L sanitary stainless pipe works well in elevated pressure applications and showcases enhanced strength allowing it to be very robust in harsh environments. The pipes are also tolerant to pitting by acids and crevice corrosion in the system.
ASTM A270 TP316L sanitary stainless pipe usually refers to the small pipe diameters, normally from 1/2” to 2 1/2”, thickness from 0.049 inch (1.24mm) to 0.15 inch (3.81mm). The maximum outer diameter of ASTM A270 TP316L tubing is 12 inch (316L.8 mm). ASTM A270 TP316L tubing using inch pound as the standard unit of measure. ASTM A270 TP316L Tube wall thickness tolerance shall not vary more than 12.5%.
Advantage of Austenitic:
Austenitic steel grades are very formable and weldable. These sanitary tubes are made of a highly corrosion-resistant, maintenance-free substance that provides hardness at low temperatures and maintains mechanical properties even when temperatures climb to high levels. Austenitic steel grades have 30-minute fire resistance in stainless steel systems without extra fire safety.
