ASTM B163 / ASME SB163 Monel 400 / UNS N04400 Nickel Alloy
Monel 400 / UNS N04400 is a nickel-copper alloy (about 23% Cu67% Ni ) that is resistant to sea water and steam at high temperatures as well as to salt and caustic solutions. Alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold working. This nickel alloy exhibits characteristics like good weldability, good corrosion resistance and high strength. A low corrosion rate in rapidly flowing brackish or seawater combined with excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in most freshwaters, and its resistance to a variety of corrosive conditions led to its wide use in marine applications and other non-oxidizing chloride solutions.

Corrosion Resistance
Monel 400 exhibits resistance to corrosion by many reducing media. It is also generally to attack by oxidizing media than higher copper alloys. This versatility makes alloy 400 suitable for service in a variety of environment. It is widely used in marine applications.While alloy 400 products exhibit very low corrosion rates in flowing seawater;
Applications
A nickel-copper alloy with high strength and excellent corrosion resistance in a range of media including sea water, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkalies. Used for marine engineering, chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment, valves, pumps, shafts, fittings, fasteners, and heat exchangers.
