overview:
Unlike several stainless steel alloy grades, 347 is a heat resistant metal. To stabilize the alloy, two elements, niobium and tantalum, have been added to the chemical composition of 347 stainless steel seamless tubing. Both niobium and tantalum are elements that are known as refractory metals. Refractory metals are elements that have a high resistance to both heat and wear. Therefore, it is not uncommon to find WERKSTOFF NR.1.4550 heat exchanger tubes in applications involving high temperatures. Many ASTM A213 TP 347 instrumentation tubes are used in the above applications due to the large amount of heat released by the heat exchanger during use.
In addition, the combination of heat and high pressure can wear out the system. Alloys stabilized with niobium and tantalum, such as 347 stainless steel tubing are suitable for these applications. 347 alloy not only has excellent heat resistance, but also has the ability to resist intergranular corrosion. The occurrence of chromium carbide is problematic in the temperature range of 800°F to 1500°F. It is in this temperature range that some alloys tend to notice a decrease in their mechanical properties. However, despite exposure to temperatures up to 1500°F, the mechanical properties of SS 347 cold rolled coiled tubing did not deteriorate.
However, more notable properties of ASTM A249 TP 347H welded pipe include higher creep strength and high stress fracture properties, both of which are significantly higher than 304 and 304L grades. In some cases, Grade 304L was replaced with the more robust UNS S34700 U-tube, as the former tends to be susceptible to intergranular corrosion. A common feature of this alloy with austenitic stainless steels is the good low-temperature toughness of SS 347 ERW Tubing.
