Alloy 400 (UNS N04400) is a solid-solution alloy that can be hardened only by cold working. It has high strength and toughness over a wide temperature range and excellent resistance to many corrosive environments.

Alloy 400 is widely used in many fields, especially marine and chemical processing. Typical applications are valves and pumps; pump and propeller shafts; marine fixtures and fasteners; electrical and electronic components; springs; chemical processing equipment; gasoline and fresh water tanks;  crude petroleum stills, process vessels and piping; boiler feedwater heaters and other eat exchangers; and deaerating heaters.

These ASTM B165 Copper Nickel is widely used in the most severe environments such as chemical processing, pollution control, pulp and paper production, industrial and municipal waste treatment, and recovery of sour natural gas. In these applications, it is advantageous to use a nickel – based alloy such as ASME SB 165 Copper Nickel Seamless Tubes due to its resistance to localized corrosion in these applications. Nickel – based alloys such as these ASTM B165 Cupro Nickel have a tendency to crater crack, so grinding of starts and stops is recommended. Contamination by grease, oil, lead, sulphur, or other low melting point elements in ASME SB 165 Cupro Nickel Seamless Tubes can lead to severe cracking problems. The welding surface and adjacent areas of these ASTM B165 Cu-Ni should be cleaned thoroughly with an appropriate solvent such as 99.9 % isopropanol (IPA). Prior to any welding for ASME SB 165 Cu-Ni Seamless Tubes, all foreign matter — grease, cutting fluids, crayon markings, scale — should be removed. Solution annealing of these ASTM B165 Copper Nickel Pipes is performed at a temperature of 2150 Degree F for a time commensurate with section size. The heat – affected weld zones in ASME SB 165 Copper Nickel Tubes have reduced precipitation of carbides and other phases to ensure uniform corrosion resistance.
