HFW Solid Finned Tubes is an acronym for High Frequency Welded Spiral Solid Finned Tubes. Spiral finned tubes provide designers with high thermal efficiency and compact design solutions for a variety of heat exchangers using clean flue gases. There are two types of spiral finned tubes: solid and serrated.

Spiral solid finned tubes are manufactured by spirally wrapping a continuous strip of fins around the tube. High-frequency resistance welding typically uses a frequency of 400 kHz. The fins are wound around the tube and continuously welded. The fin strip is spirally wound around the tube and continuously welded to the base tube along the root of the spiral by a high-frequency electrical process. The fin tape is tensioned and laterally restrained as it forms around the tube, ensuring that the fin tape is in firm contact with the surface of the base tube. A gas metal arc welding process is utilized to continuously weld the fin strip at the point where it begins to bend around the diameter of the pipe.
