AISI 431 Seamless Steel Shaft UNS S43100 (DIN 1.4057) For Machine Connection
AISI 431 is a high chromium martensitic stainless steel with high yield strength and good corrosion resistance in both organic and industrial environments. It has excellent tensile and torsional strength and good toughness, making it ideal for shaft and bolt applications. It can be hardened to approximately 40 HRC. Due to its high yield strength, this grade is not easily cold worked and is therefore not recommended for operations such as cold heading, bending, deep drawing or spinning. Martensitic stainless steels have a high hardness and other properties are affected to some extent. Manufacturing must be done with poor weldability and usually with a final hardening and tempering heat treatment. Corrosion resistance is lower than that of ordinary austenitic steels, and the range of useful operating temperatures is limited by the loss of ductility at temperatures below freezing and the loss of strength at high temperatures due to over-tempering. Of all the stainless steels, 1.4057 is one of the best in terms of combining high strength, corrosion resistance and good impact toughness.
